The Battery Vehicle Review is published regularly and is sent free to all paid up members in the European postal area. For those members outside Europe £5 must be added to the membership subscription each year.

Letters, articles and other contributions are welcome from both members and non-members, and should be sent to the Editor. Most formats of computer disc can also be accepted, as can contributions by E-mail. (the preferred computer format is as a .txt file) Please remove any pictures and send as separate JPEG files. If sending large graphics files please attach each to an individual message. This expedites downloading. PDF files will not produce the best picture quality as they use only 32 brightness levels rather than the 256 levels of JPEG-PDF tends to remove shadow detail.

Editorial

Please note that for most members their subscription has fallen due. For those still using traditional methods of payment a renewal form is enclosed. The calendar of events is very full and there are almost certainly other events of interest that I have not learned about- to keep me up to date I do need the network of members to keep me informed.

It would be helpful if people interested in attending the AGM and the associated exhibition of vehicles tell us very soon as changing arrangements at the last minute to suit a late burst of enthusiasm is awkward and expensive in time and money.

I am hearing more about public fast charging facilities. My local council will apparently be installing facilities to suit the UKGovernment/Nissan electric vehicle project. Unfortunately no international standard for such facilities has been reached. (I gather there will be a conference in Brussels soon to discuss creating such a standard) Of course if the fast charger is at a different voltage to the vehicle quite a big and heavy voltage converter will be required on the vehicle because of the elevated power levels that fast charging requires. I have a suspicion that some of the commercial electric vehicles that are about would not meet current wiring regulations if that inspection regime were to be applied.

4, 5, and 6 of June 2010

Monday, December 14 2009, Levallois City Council approved plans for the organization of the first GP Elec Levallois. The Grand Prix and surrounding events will take place on the 4, 5, and 6 of June 2010. It will be an amazing showcase of electric vehicles. Levallois city council approved Mobygreen's plans for the event after months of planning and preparation in secret.

The course will take high-powered TESLA cars and electric racing prototypes around a 3km course (1.8 miles) through the city. The course has 8 bends, a tunnel, and an 800 meter straight. The cars- although high powered- will be quiet, making the event free of sound pollution and something completely new for the public. Their cheers will be louder than the cars' engines. In the spirit of an old-fashioned grand prix it is completely free to the public. Spectators will have the chance to see the cars up close after each race.

The Grand Prix will host a Sustainable Mobility Salon in the cityÕs square, where the public will be able to learn more about electric vehicles, environmental concerns, and innovations in transportation. The salon will have events for children and adults, including electric go-karts, children cars, and an eco-educational garden. GP Elec is a free, eco-friendly event.

About Levallois

Levallois is located in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, France. The city has a strong relationship with industry, as seen by the gear wheel on its coat-of-arms. The history of Levallois is inseparable of that of the automobile. The establishment of companies such as Clement-Bayard, Delage, and Chapron gave way to the importance of auto manufacturing in the city. The Citroen Ô2cvÕwhich will remain legendary, forever etched into automobile history, was produced for 40 years in Levallois.

June 9, 2010

A SECOND Isle of Man TTXGP race is provisionally scheduled to take place over the Mountain Course in TT week on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 after the Supersport Junior race two. But just before that, the electric bikes are set to race for the first time in America Sonoma, California.

STATEMENT FROM THE ISLE OF MAN GOVERNMENT

Following speculation and unsubstantiated claims regarding The Isle of Man Government's decision to run their own clean emissions event as part of the 2010 TT races, The Isle of Man Government's Department of Tourism and Leisure wishes to put on record the facts regarding their decision.

The Isle of Man Government made a significant investment in the TTXGP in 2009, both financially and through officer time across a number of departments. In order to protect this investment, the Isle of Man Government's Council of Ministers decided that if the Department was unable to reach agreement with TTXGP Ltd that it should run its own event. Regulations for the new event, TT Zero, were issued this week. This race will be run as a stand-alone class as part of the 2010 Isle of Man TT races meeting.

The Department is confident that with the support of the teams and riders, and the experienced third party agencies that are involved with running the TT Races, they can build on the 2009 TTXGP race.

The teams and riders will now have direct access to funds from the Isle of Man Government to assist with their travel and other costs associated with their participation and will also benefit from the integral association with the TT races that the event will now have.

The Isle of Man Government remains totally committed to clean emission motorcycle racing and the development of the technology that is associated with clean emission machines.

Sat 19th and Sun 20th June - Newark Kit Car show - Newark & Notts. Showground at the A46/A17 Junction on the A1, 2 miles north of  Newark-on-Trent - Postcode: NG24 2NY - Drove Lane

Newark is a very family friendly show with plenty on offer in addition to cars. Our BVS display always attracts a lot of interest and I hope that we will be allocated the same pitch as in previous years right next to the main exhibition hall.

I plan to attend Newark for the whole weekend from Friday afternoon to Sunday. As usual I plan a BBQ for Saturday evening, and if a few people turn up on Friday evening (like last year) we can have a BBQ then as well. At Newark drivers of kitcars and EV are admitted free but passengers must pay the usual entrance fee. There is no charge for camping all weekend.

THE HAYNES VILLAGE 100
Festival of Motoring

The fifth Haynes Village 100 event will be held on Sunday June 27th 2010. It will again provide a unique opportunity to see over 100 Classic vehicles parade the 2.7 mile circuit of the village roads, part of which is open countryside, along with a static display and village gala.

5

The event is a celebration of motoring through the last hundred years, the highlight of which is a "closed road" parade around the village. Previous events have attracted over 150 vehicles, including some very beautiful and rare examples. Visitors have had the pleasure of seeing the vehicles parade the village circuit. This, combined with the static display, has proved to be a unique event that has attracted a great number of people. The 2010 event will follow a similar format with exhibitors being invited to display their vehicles in the playing field from 12 noon, before embarking on the parade. Following the parade the vehicles will re-assemble on the playing field, providing an opportunity to enjoy the rest of the event.

We aim to reflect the past 100 years of motoring history by showing examples from as many years as possible between 1910, or earlier, and 2010.The event is open to cars, motorcycles, light commercial and light agricultural vehicles, and possibly steam. Please note that in order to participate in the parade the vehicle must be "road legal".

The closing date for receiving entries is Monday June 7th 2010. Entry to the event and parade will cost £6.00 and will include a commemorative plaque and an event programme.

A track event at Shakespeare County Raceway, Long Marston Airfield, Long Marston, Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 8LL.

Electrathon 2010 "YES, IT IS ON AGAIN, FOR 2010"

A two day EVent, on the last weekend of September, near Stratford.

This promises to be even bigger, and better, than 2009.Your committee and the wonderful Shakespeare County Raceway folks are now working like crazy people to make it a big leap forward, based on our happy 2009 meeting. Your committee with relief and delight would receive any ideas, and especially any volunteers for any one or more of the myriad individual tasks leading to an all-round success. We are aiming for a full circuit, some degree of group racing, more variety of events within the main programme, possibly the opportunity for visitors to "Try an EV" under supervision, participation (and stands) by trade and industry, Her Majesty's Government and possibly even the European T.U.V.!

We need sponsors, and helpers, else there'll be no Event. I can't make the bigger 2010 Event, that the BVS needs, happen, ALL ON MY OWN

Sponsors need a return on their money This means:

At least several hundred people, and many other EV groups

Stalls for trade and industry

Covered arenas, for info. on all things EV, technical, underwriting, parts and materials sourcing, safety and regulatory

Circuit and sprint competitions both days

Non-competitive activities such as Òtry an EV (under supervision)

9

I propose TRADE STALLS, price to be advised after another chat with SCR . and a MARQUEE with seating, for advice AND AN INDEX of where to buy all kinds of EV stuff, COSTING EACH ÒabsenteeÓ SPONSOR say, £20 to be included.

Not BVS endorsement, just a known source of actual EV parts, books etc.

Saturday  2nd October -

The BVS are to hold an Exhibition Day at Sturton By Stow Village Show on which day the local Show Committee will host the BVS with vehicles on exhibition.

It does not take ÒAcres of Race Track StadiumÓ and much cost to show our ÒgoodsÓ. This is a simple village show with the added attraction of an exhibition of Electric Vehicles. At no cost we have got two fenced–off tarmac tennis courts so we can show and do what we like inside with the public viewing our actions from outside the wire. Complete safety without the need for insurance and the like.

Sturton is 9 miles north of Lincoln. Market Rasen is 16 miles north-east of Lincoln with a distance of about 17 miles between the two venues.

As we go to press no-one has contacted Malcolm Skeels with details of exhibits.

If you are interested in showing off a vehicle please contact Malcolm Skeels,

3 Woburn Avenue, Lincoln LN13 HJ.

Ample Bed and Breakfast accommodation is readily available in the area and at Market Rasen. A locked yard is available in Market Rasen for overnight storage of valuable vehicles.

10

The A1 and A46 are dual carriageway to near Lincoln with the last 12 miles being single carriageway. Sturton is where the A1500 and the B1241 intersect.

Sun 3rd October, 12.30pm - BVS Members' Annual Luncheon, Market Rasen Social Club, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, LN8 3NR

BVS Annual Luncheon

Having approved of my organisation of the luncheon this (2009) year the BVS committee lumbered me - well they approved my ideas for October 2010.

The luncheon will be at Market Rasen Social Club (Lincolnshire) on the first Sunday in October '10.To avoid unnecessary expense early arrangements are necessary. Hence this early request.

As we go to press 5 members have paid for their lunch. Please get on and contact Malcolm Skeels so that we can have a successful lunch.-BJH

Our menu is:- Lincolnshire vegetable soup

Roast beef with Yorkshire Pudding and Òall the trimmingsÓ

Apple crumble with custard or cream

                       Coffee or tea

-all for the cost of £13.00 per person

Alternative dishes will be available at the time of booking. Namely Prawn Cocktail, Turkey and ÒtrimmingsÓ, various Sundaes. Additionally a complete vegetarian option is available. My idea is to emphasize the ÒTastes of LincolnshireÓ at which the chef at the social club is an expert. A G-Wiz at Santa Pod

Unfortunately I only found out about the ÒAlternative EnergyÓ event at Santa Pod raceway after the last ÒReviewÓ had been printed. The events at the track are ¼ mile runs from a standing start. Enquiries revealed that they would be happy if I entered something as inappropriate as the G-Wiz and that mains electricity would be available for recharging. (I was wary of plugging the G-Wiz into a generator as poor earthing arrangements can be very hurtful to electronic power circuits. ) Frank Wykes volunteered to take some time off from campaigning for a seat in parliament to come and help. He had a rigid towbar if necessary-I discovered that that the strange screw-eye with a left-hand thread in the toolkit was a towing fitting. Actually Poddington airfield was comfortably within range of Greenleys even if you get lost as I did. My single run on the track was pretty undramatic as the stickiness of the track used most of my meagre supply of power. ( 1/8 mile in 19.4 seconds 31.34 mph )

After I returned to the paddock it was pointed out that I had a somewhat flat tyre and of course no spare. However some sealant and footpumping restored the shape and things have been fine since -after some lateral thinking I got a spare wheel from a trailer shop a couple of days later. The G-Wiz is now back to towing trailer loads of rubbish to the tip.

I know where there is a 1975 Corbin-Gentry electric motorcycle which could easily be upgraded with an Agni motor capable of some 40 hp- maybe next year.

  The Tesla ( ¼ mile 12.6447 secs. 102.89 mph) was beaten by a 1965 Volkwagen ( ¼ mile 11.4975 secs. 112.38 mph )

I am interested in your bracket that poor earthing can hurt electronic power circuits – I wonder if this relates to my disaster to the Curtis controller and Zivan charger last June which wrecked most of my cells, and I would be interested sometime to learn more of your warning.- Alan Ward

Back to the Future -Enfield Electric Car

The School has taken delivery of an Enfield Electric car originally built in 1975. The vehicle which has been donated by EA Technology will be restored to its former glory. However, under the bonnet things will be moving with the times. The vehicle will be a platform for some of our undergraduate and postgraduate projects, to bring it up to modern standards in terms of traction drives, batteries, power electronics, charging systems and regenerative energy braking.

The technologies investigated by the project students is supported by the research interests of some of our staff in distributed energy and electric/hybrid vehicles.

Lindbergh Electric Aircraft Prize

LEAP is a suite of prizes designed to promote the practical development of electric aircraft by recognizing specific advances in this emerging cleantech industry. The prizes will be awarded for the following:

Best Electric Aircraft: Awarded for the best example of a practical electric aircraft in any category – Experimental, LSA, or Certified.

*We will allow hybrid-electric aircraft to be nominated as well but only series hybrids where the source of primary propulsion is electric. An example of this type of system is the Chevy Volt, which uses an internal combustion engine as a range extender but has a pure electric powertrain.

Best Electric Aircraft Sub-System: Defined as a set of components designed to work together to accomplish a specific task which advances the field of electric aircraft in both performance and practicality, e.g., electric powertrains, energy storage systems, charging systems, etc.

Best Electric Aircraft Component Technology: Defined as individual components that serve to advance the performance and practicality of electric aircraft, e.g., batteries, electric motors, power electronics, etc.

Public Choice Award: Allowing the public to vote on electric aircraft that are currently flying whether practical or not. This would be a chance to gauge the publicÕs interest and excitement with respect to various electric aircraft projects.

The YASAª Motor

The Yokeless And Segmented Armature (YASAª) topology is a new type of axial flux motor that shows a step change improvement in torque density when compared to other axial flux motors. The topology is based around a series of magnetically separated segments that form the stator of the machine. The step change in the specific torque of the motor (20Nm/kg which is typically at least 2 times better than the best alternatives) comes from the combination of patented improvements in the magnetics, the cooling and the packaging of the motor.

The 500Nm YASAª motor has been developed specifically for electric and hybrid vehicles.  The motors are compact (34cm in diameter and 7cm wide), and fit within the space of the front or rear differential of a typical vehicle (the differential is no longer required). The motors output 500Nm per 'slice', with a peak power of around 75kW. This means 2 motor slices are enough for most vehicles. Four slices may be used for sports car type performance, such as the Delta coupe, which aims for a 0-60 time of less than 5s.

Dear Brian,

I've just come back from the official opening of the charging points in

Leamington Spa. There are two charging bays at St. Peter's car park and two more at Covent Garden car park. Up to two hours charging is free, although you still have to pay the normal car parking charge.

The charging bay at St. Peter's has already been used by one electric car

owner. The local council are going to be monitoring usage - if the charging

points get used a lot they will install other charging bays in other towns

across Warwickshire.

North-West Group News - June 2010

We have enjoyed an EV-angelical few months up north, with interest in electric vehicles continuing to blossom locally. Six months of hard work paid off on April 10th, when EV enthusiasts had a lovely day at Luther King House in Manchester for our second BVS national conference, ElectraCon, that the North-West group hosted.

The conference went very well, with people in attendance from academia, industry, BVS members and the general public. We had an interesting display of electric vehicles outside to test-drive and look over during the lunch break.

The dayÕs talks included:-

-Tim Nicklin from Ford, telling us about the new electric Ford Focus car, which is currently undergoing trials with members of the public.

- Jason Scholes, doing a Q&A to introduce the Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

- Azhar Hussain, from TTXGP, telling us about the birth and future of the TTXGP and egrandprix.

- Antoni Offert exploring The Peukert Effect.

-John Lilly sharing his expertise on the subject of Converting Internal Combustion Engine vehicles to Electric.

-Open-mic-short presentations from BVS members on their activities/interests.

A DVD of ElectraCon 2010 is in production, and we hope to bring you details of price etc in the next BVR.

I am already working on next yearÕs event, the date of which has been set for Saturday 2nd April 2011.That date is a couple of weeks before Easter.

If you would like to help or contribute to ElectraCon 2011 in any way, do please get in touch  we are inviting short talks from members again, but there are many other ways you can help, for example by recommending speakers, by suggesting sponsors who might be willing to donate money to contribute to the event costs (and to the society), and by helping me to promote the event outside the society.

In other news, the charging point document that the group produced a few months ago, for issue to local shops, businesses etc, is now available for download from the members area of the website for you to print-off at home. Alternatively you can request a copy by post. The document is designed to pass on to any local business to advise them on how to install low-cost charging points for employee and/or customers electric vehicles.

Best wishes to our members, for a happy and battery-powered Summer,

Mary Perkins and Tim Crumpton.

Equalising cells in lithium iron phosphate batteries

One problem with Lithium batteries is keeping all the cells at the same state of charge. With more traditional acid or alkali batteries the cells are equalized by gentle overcharging, but this could be disastrous.

I have discovered that Evolve electronics in the USA  http://evolveelectrics.com do a shunt to go across each cell of a lithium iron phosphate batteries that cuts in at 3.65 volts wasting some 600 mA. (like a large zener diode) so that weak cells get the chance to catch up.

BATTERY ELECTRIC RAIL POSSIBILITIES

The electrification of British railways has long been a dream of many modern rail enthusiasts on economic grounds as well as environmental ones. The main stumbling block has been the cost of either third rail or over-head power line installation, with all the modifications to bridges and tunnels that would entail. Now that ranges of 100 miles on a single charge are possible with battery electric railcars and short goods trains, it opens up the prospect of electrifying many branch lines in England, Wales and Scotland, not forgetting Northern lreland as well. No modifications to existing track would be necessary. The main cost would be in the battery and the fixed charging stations at strategic points on the line. Where battery electric trains passed over existing electrified lines' either third rail or overhead line, some opportunity charging might be possible. In practice each battery electric railcar set would need a quick exchange battery system to be installed at each terminus. Also 3-phase mains charger facilities would need to be set up, either on the railcars themselves, or at the railhead terminuses.
