range extending generator

Do you own or use a EV. Then this is a good place to discuss things.

I'm not quite sure I understand your set up, but assuming that your battery is 144V and can be tapped at the mid voltage point, then you could either charge it from two motors wired as generators and connected in series (so 2 x 72V = 144V) or you could have two motors wired as generators arranged so that each charged half the pack at 72V.

Is that what you meant?

hehe sorry, yea that was a little confusing!

I was wandering if one generator producing 200amps at 72v could supply a 144v battery pack 100amps, by splitting the charge 50% to 6 batteries (72v 100A) and 50% to other 6 batteries (72v 100A). I couldnt see how this is possible as all the batteries are already wired in series.??

You're right, if you only use one 72V generator then you'd have to rearrange the battery pack as a 72V one, by connecting the two halves together in parallel, rather than series, for charging. You might be able to do this with a big contactor though, and so still run, albeit at lower speed, whilst charging.

It depends on whether or not all your systems will still work OK on 72V, rather than 144V. If they will, and all you lose is some speed, then this may be an option.

Yea, I thought as much. I dont really want to lose the HP/rpm, as I would still require to travel at higher speeds.

So it would be: 2x DC PM generators, probably a cheaper option like the etek's.

or:

11/12KW AC generator, with 2x NG3, 1X NG5 chargers. (I already have the NG3 chargers)

Discussion about charging at work has been moved to viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2935

Have you considered investing the time, money, and effort in having "Charge Points" installed at the locations that you plan to visit? A 240V 32A "Commando" socket can be installed for very little money, and many pubs and restaurants are happy to help... I know this is not as versatile as towing your own generator but would be part of the long term solution for all EV drivers.
