Get your heater working.

Postby Grumpy-b » Fri Aug 19, 2011 1:14 pm

Its approaching the time of year whe you try and use your heater. It wont work! Its a two fold reason why they dont work, one the pump gets sticky, two if its not been used for some months the fuel leaks back and it needs to be primed.
Both of the Webasto heaters fitted to the Berlingo have the same plug layout. Pins etc the same numbers.
So open the bonnet. Pull the main power plug off by squeezing the clip on the long side. Remove the other longer lpug by squeezing the tabs on the end. Thats why you took off the power plug first.
Get yourself at least a half metre of small sized cable. Strip the ends 10mm.
Look at the bottom of the longer plug and find pin6 they are marked. Tease out enough strands of cable to go in the very small hole of pin 6. Touch the other end of the cable to the pos of the aux battery, listen hard and each time you touch the +12v there is a click. Each click sends a few ccs of fuel to the heater do this for a couple of dozen times. The pump is now nice and free and the fuel pipe hopefully full.
Reconnect the plugs, ensuring they are fully home. Try the heater. Hopefully it will work. If it doesnt, It is worth repeating this exercise as the fuel pipe may not be full. If it doesent now, thenyou are unlucky and need to visit your local truck specialists/ barge chaps, and seek expert Webasto help. The pumps are the biggest problem, dont be quickly led into spending a lot of funds. DO the above first.

Thanks Grumpy.
Although to be fair, after last years cold & attendant heater failures, I have regularly run my heater throughout the summer on a weekly basis, for half an hour on the early morning dog walk trip. (Don't ask!) I repeat the tip I imparted last year after several cold trips. I opined that the pump was sticking. I squirted a few oil can squirts of oil into the tank each time I filled up. Since then, my heater has performed faultlessly. Smells a bit two strokey if you are enthusiastic with the oilcan, but you soon find what works. Hope this helps again.

I shall copy the info down though, you never know!!!!

I also improved my heater by adding some "dry fuel" to a tank.

This takes (well disolves) any water in the tank into the fuel, after the addition of it it ran much better.

I think some of the problems could be condensation forming inside the tank due to it being plastic and not that big along with it not getting used a great deal.

I have wondered about the "oil" idea but wasnt sure if the oil might slowly attack the pump, not knowing quite its internal make up ???

Hello Chris.
Where do you get "dry fuel" from? I have a Morgan Three Wheeler that stands for long times in winter & always suffers with water in the fuel for a few weeks in spring. Sounds as though this might kill several birds with one stone.

You can get it from Halfords

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165750

.....but it might not be the cheapest way, main issue I find is finding a motor factors selling it :?

Must admit I wouldnt be without it these days, very handy product, lawnmowers, strimmers, boat engines, berlingo heaters  if you suspect you have water contamination a splash of this and it just dissappears.
Depending on how bad the contamination is I've found decides how much I put, dont follow the intructions as they'd have you using the lot in one hit  for a lawn mower I've used about capfull into a tank of fuel to cure water in the carb problems, the blingo I tried to run the tank as low as possible (light on) then poured about 1/4 of the bottle in and then filled the tank and all came good 8) certainly ran a lot happier afterwards.

Hope that helps

I'm on the case ta!

Oh for such a product thirty years ago when I was running lorries on the collieries. During the winter, every bloody day was a constant battle with condensation in the filters. Probably shouldn't have been so mean & bought my fuel from the local garage instead of bribing the tanker drivers. hey ho.
