I think? the left and right brushes must be positive as electrons flow from neg to pos, so you find the positive will get the deposits, as does the pos post on a car gets the most corrosion.

I think you are right Sparky. Its the same with the wear on spark plugs, and anything else where there is an arc or spark. It erodes the negative electrode first as the electrons flow.

Yes will keep a record of brush wear, the last lot (orginal PSA ones) definately had done about 10k and as you can see still had some wear left on them, this new set are of a slightly harder material and non PSA ones so we will see with interest if theres any change in brush or com wear.

Great write up chaps, just about to do mine had the can up on ramps undone cover changed one , undone screw to rotate but couldn't find one opposite side so gave up and come in for tea lol, is it the same procedure on all electriques ? Mines a 2003

Yup - same on all. Two bolts to loosen to rotate brush carrier, that you can get to either through the front wheel well (take wheel off) or if you are underneath in say a pit or the car is on ramps, you can get to by feel.

Dont forget to re-align the rotating brush carrier using the alignment holes and a small podger.

Cheers John , will take the wheel off tomorrow and give it another bash, the bush I did manage to get to looked ok anyway so hopefully the other 3 are ok too.

Good tip about the wheel off , wish I would of asked before I started but you live and learn lol

Keeping this really useful thread high.

My lithium Berlingo is very heavy, and I often do gentle motorway runs, so this afternoon I did a brush inspection. Wear was surprisingly little, but one brush was cracked so I have replaced the set.

Old and new brushes for comparison, cracked brush at top of picture. More photos if you follow the link to Flickr. Dimensions are:
New brush 27mm
Wear limit (white line) 13mm
Old brushes 23mm
so old brushes were about 25% worn. Bah!
