Public charging design guide

Postby NeilK » Sun Nov 23, 2014 5:19 pm

I was wondering if anybody knew of a design guide to help get charging infrastructure built in the optimum way. It seems as though everybody is making it up as they go along and there are some basic do/don't lessons that would benefit from being written down.

There have been attempts (there is a TfL one from 2010), but it is not statutory and also contains some items I would dispute.

The reason for this is that we have recently had a rapid charger installed nearby and it has been put in the corner of a car park. By putting it in the corner it limits how many cars can get to the cable, so it makes shuffling cars mandatory to get the next on charge. If it had been placed one space to the side then up to 3 cars could have been reached by taking the cable from one to another without needing to shuffle cars. It is not rocket science, but it seems to need a guide.

When I used to work in a council design office there were guides for dropped kerbs, turning heads, disabled spaces, signs, lighting.... you name it there was a guide. Is there one for chargers?

Hello Neil

I think you are asking for official council or government guidelines, but in case it is any use I will point you at the document the BVS wrote back in 2009:

http://www.batteryvehiclesociety.org.uk ... ionsV1.pdf
http://www.batteryvehiclesociety.org.uk ... intsV1.pdf

They are very out-of-date now, and almost worthless because of that, but may give someone pointers to do an overhauled version.

I have just copied these to the publicly accessible folder. I think they don't belong in the 'members only' section any more. They were mentioned in this members-only thread:

Tim,

Thanks for this. It is interesting to see what the state of thinking was and seeing how it moves on.

The TfL stuff is at: http://www.newride.org.uk/downloads/EVC ... -Apr10.pdf

I am surprised that there is nothing from those funding the installation.... Lets see who else comes up with something.

Neil
