Mini City EL

Do you own or use a EV. Then this is a good place to discuss things.

Mini City EL

Postby Ray186000mps » Thu Jul 23, 2009 6:50 pm

Hi folks.
I have just purchased a Mini City EL and I am hoping to get it back on the road.It is the sister of Karls white one,"this is the red one",that once was owned by one of the Gibbs brothers.
Unfortunatly, this one is no longer a runner,as the previus owner encountered a problem when returning from the M.O.T.station.
It is completly dead, and if you try to connect the batteries up,a trip that was installed,to replace a fuse, trips out.
The only way you can stop this hapening,is if you dissconect the DC to DC convertor.
I am in the process of getting a trailor built at the moment but when it is completed,I would apreciate any advice as to who I could take the car to,in order to get it back up and running.
I think these are fantastic little cars, and will enhance my collection of Sinclair C5s,hahahah.
PS,Heres hoping I have not made a big mistake,hehehe. :D

Getting my Mini EL running.

Postby Ray186000mps » Fri Aug 14, 2009 8:42 pm

Well I installed the new DC to DC convertor board, and still no life, but some of the dash did light up.
Played around with the fuses, under the dash, and, sudenly, the relay clicked in and I had power to the motor.
A short run up the road, and she cut out.
Removed the fuse in question and re inserted it,and she was away again.
But only for a short run before it cut out again.
Now,I must explain that I charged the batteries up when the dud DC to DC board was fitted,by charging each battery separatly with a 12v charger. So now The new board is fitted,I put it on charge with the correct charger, for 24 hours.
Only to discover that the charger is completly dead.
So I am in a fix now,as I have no way of knowing if the problem is the low battery circuit.
If I charge the batteries separatly again,to re-connect them by discharging the capacitors may then take the vltage down to much?
Any ideas,hehehe.
