In the Feb/March 2009 edition of Traffic Technology International there's an interesting article about 'Fostering a transportation energy transformation' which discusses, among other things, how battery storage can make "EVs ....to act as model citizens of the utility grid by providing ancillary services to the grid when they are plugged in."
for e.g. Evs can help "regulate the frequency of the grid, providing power spinning reserves that can be called-up at short notice. "
