Heating...

Postby aminorjourney » Wed Aug 29, 2007 10:28 am

Isn't it the time of year our thoughts turn to battery heating?

Discuss ;)

I don't have heating with my lithium Ions but as I'm using a garage I'm hoping they won't get too cold in the car (the batteries do at least have the equivalent of 200mm of rockwool insulating them in the form of that space age insulating blanket you can get)

I use custom designed heating wire similar to that used for heating house floor. I only did modifications that this cable won't go up over 50 deg C at any circumstances. But my idea was to heat cells in temperatures below 5 deg C before (and during) charging.

Now I use it also for pre-heating cells in extreme conditions - you have to wait 5-10 minutes before you can run the car.

It's not optimal but I'm working on it.

Only thing on the Blingo is I try to adjust the recharge on and off times so it finishes closer to the time I will want to use the van.

Generally the batts finish there charge at about 25C .
