Manufacturers for EV batteries

Postby Rob » Tue Aug 28, 2007 3:03 pm

Dear battery vehicle specialists,
I am studying a new concept for an EV (Battery EV), which will have
a Azure Dynamics driveline (AC motor+gearbox+inverter+motorcontrol).

Now I am considering to select batteries, either NiMh or Li Ion.

I need 156V DC.

Can somebody help me with some manufactures of EV battery packages,
it would help me.

Thanks,
best regards,
Rob

Hi Rob

Where Paul when you need him

Our ressy EVguru should be able to assist with this one, are you looking for a passenger road going vehicle or materials handling ?? as there is a big difference.

Li-ion is really the way to go TBH but its not cheap

We'll need a lot more information before we can help.

What type or vehicle;

Weight
Top speed
Cruise speed
Acceleration
Average range

Also;

Battery capacity
Peak current
Weight
Space available
Budget

Your level of expertise (very few 'off the peg' solutions).

What model of controller/motor etc. are you thinking of?

156 volt is right at the botom end of the range most (all?) the Azure stuff is designed for.

BTW Azure used to be Solectria and their stuff was based on Brusa designs.

NiMh is probably a waste of time. Various deals were done to prevent large format cells being produced comercially and I think only GP (Gold Peak) have any available.

They have really quite poor energy efficiency and you need a decent thermal management system to deal with the waste heat. That's on top of a good battery management system.

Manufactures for EV Batteries

Postby Rob » Wed Aug 29, 2007 12:59 pm

Hi,
thanks for the first advises.
Let me explain as follow between brackets[]

What type or vehicle;[concept]

Weight [ 1100 kg + 450kg max load]
Top speed [120 km/h]
Cruise speed [50 km/h]
Acceleration [ not specificied yet]
Average range [150km minimum]

Also;

Battery capacity [ not speficied yet]
Peak current [not specified yet]
Weight (as low as possible, but not against any price]
Space available [limited]
Budget [4500 Euro for 1 EV]

Your level of expertise (very few 'off the peg' solutions). [little, electrical engineer]

What model of controller/motor etc. are you thinking of? [motor : Azure AC24 DS5-82-30035, controller: Azure DMOC445, inverter]

156 volt is right at the botom end of the range most (all?) the Azure stuff is designed for. [ we know, the alternative at Azure = 336V]

Costs is for as a big issue, but since EV stands or falls with its driving range I think Li Ion is maybe a better way (smaller, less weight, higher
power to weight ratio, but more expensive)

So I am looking for the costs of either NiMh or Li Ion battery sets, in order
to set our strategy.

best regards,
Rob

Rob,
to fit in your budget and voltage I only see 5.5 kWh li-ion Battery Pack and only if you think of bigger quantities.
Sorry, the market is cruel. Even Chinese factories I know won't give you better offer.
And you must also consider the importing costs.

I hope to have better news for all by the end of this year but I'm not making any promise.

Hello,
what is estimated sales prices (5 pcs) and
is there any dimensional info available ?
Best regards,
Rob

So a purpose built vehicle rather than a conversion.

Weight [ 1100 kg + 450kg max load]
Top speed [120 km/h]
Cruise speed [50 km/h]
Acceleration [ not specificied yet]
Average range [150km minimum]

Not too outrageous. With the exception of the load capacity and range requirement my Scirocco conversion would do that. The load capacity appears quite high. Is this intended to be a delivery vehicle?

Battery capacity [ not speficied yet]
Peak current [not specified yet]
Weight (as low as possible, but not against any price]
Space available [limited]
Budget [4500 Euro for 1 EV]

That's barely enough for a good lead acid battery and management system!

motor : Azure AC24 DS5-82-30035, controller: Azure DMOC445, inverter....

...the alternative at Azure = 336V

I think you might be misinterpreting the specifications. The motor can be used at any voltage between 120 and 336 volt.

Costs is for as a big issue, but since EV stands or falls with its driving range I think Li Ion is maybe a better way

You've chosen quite an expensive drive system, which is going to constrict your budget elsewhere.

So I am looking for the costs of either NiMh or Li Ion battery sets, in order to set our strategy.

You're chasing a moving target. Lithium is not a mature technology and as I said before, there are very few complete solutions, you tend to have to do a lot of the work yourself.

If you build your POC (proof of concept) vehicle around lead acid, you'll side step a lot of problems and you can upgrade later. I've seen more than one project where the high capacity of Lithium was used as a crutch to give an inefficient vehicle design decent performance.
