Haze USA site has lots more info on it. The HAZE EV & Solar Cyclic Charging.pdf can be found here; http://www.hazebatteryusa.com/s.nl/sc.15/.f

From the document
Soft Start – Following a deep discharge applying the full current immediately may damage the
battery and cause overheating, the application of the current is tapered during the soft start
period to allow the recharge process to commence as efficiently as possible. Soft start is only
used following a deep discharge or when battery voltages are low

Give the batteries an hour rest before connecting the charger, particularly on hot days, and maybe consult with the charger supplier and confirm your charger meets the Soft Start requirements listed in the manual.

Thanks for the detailed response Greg, Unfortunately I haven't managed to hunt down a "inductive clamp on meter". Not that I think it matters as being limited for space, I will just get the largest capacity battery that fits; which I believe is the 82Ah. Thus its just a question of whether to go for AGM or GEL. According to the data sheets there is a 2Ah difference but the GEL has a much better charge cycle.

To summarise the probable cause of my initial problem. It looks like the cheap mobility scooter chargers don't have "Soft Start" and that starting a recharge immediately after running the battery right down is damaging them. The solution is to wait for an hour after use before putting them on charge.

Additionally, it would appear that the current batteries are irreversible damaged and that the only choice is to replace them.

That all sounds reasonable, I think the gel would be a better choice. Let us know how you get on.

Be careful as gel and agm batteries do not have the same type of chargers??? eric www.mobilitybatterystore.co.uk
