EV Racecar for $15.000 ? Can it be done?

Postby Deffe » Mon Mar 24, 2008 7:37 pm

Hi all!

I've browing through the net for a few days mainly for the fun of it and come accross a few cars and ideas that was really interresting and fun to learn about.

I own a car that I use on a racetrack. Ive changed the engine to a bigger turbo charged one and it kicks ass!

I love the racetrack but I hate the gas bill and I want to have something that no one else has. And thats where the electric part comes in.

Ive changed everything there is on my car, the only thing that is left to change might be the roof. Everything else is either carbonfiber or something similar :)

But Im now looking for a new challenge, a new car. A car I can use on a racetrack. I want to be able to run at least 10 laps, but if possible 50-60 or more on one charge. Or that I can recharge it quickly which I doubt I can due to the heat that it would cause?

Can this be done?

I plan on buying a car with a wrecked engine and throw out engine, exhaust and backseats and so on.

My goals:

0-60 on at least 5seconds ( I prefear 3-4seconds )
distance: 20-30miles (less is ok as long as the thrill can excuse it).

The car is weighting about 1200kgs with engine. if I strip it out it weighting about 950kgs. and the gearbox is 60kgs which I assume will have to be kept in the car.

I have loads of space in the center of the car just behind the drivingseat where I can place batteries making the biggest wheight as low and "centerd" to the middle of the car.

Is it possible to build this? if not then just tell me so that I can stop this while I can.

But if it is possible, how and what do I have to do?. How would you do? what are your thoughts?

I want to be unique so thats why I wont tell the car I will choose. But the windresistance is 0.29 on the car Im getting (im swedish so my english aint perfect sorry, but I assume you know what I mean by "windresistance"). The car itself is not included in the $15.000.

I would have hoped for a bit more info then that?

Do you have MSN or ICQ?

Sending you a PM with my info if you are able to tell me something. I just came accross a dude that has converted a car similar to mine with good results (quartermile in 13.5sec). And he built his car for $17.000 and thats 3 years ago, by mounting 2engines (9") in series.

One slight problem. You're in the USA and this a UK based website.

Much as I'd love to tell you more, until we've launched the car I can't. You'll just have to wait a few weeks like the rest of the world

I thought Sweden used Kronas not Dollars. I'll be glad to let you know all about the car as soon as I am able :)

Hello Deffe, and welcome.

Conversions are very possible- peruse http://evalbum.com/ for ideas on range, speed, voltage, and a hundred other variables.

Sorry I can't help you more myself, but there are some very knowledgeable people on here who can advise you better than I.

qdos- your oft mentioned secret project is a complete car, is it not? Deffe was asking for advice on a conversion.

Off to bed now after a long nightshift

Hej och välkommen Deffe!

Like Tim says, your goals should be achievable with your budget. Here's a website you might like: http://www.plasmaboyracing.com/

Paul Crompton is the racing specialist here. Hopefully he can help you with more specific advice when he drops in.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Im looking forward in seeing what qdos has in mind even though I am not sure what it is.

I might start before that. I might wait until next year, or the year to come after that. Unsure at the moment.

I read alot about batteryexplosions and that sounds a bit scary.
