Membership Secretary.

Postby arsharpe » Wed Jun 04, 2008 8:25 pm

Hi,

New Membership Secretary

For those that don't know me my name is Robert Sharpe and I am the new BVS Membership Secretary.

I would like to start-off by saying many thanks to the previous Membership Secretary for his support to the society over the previous years.

Hopefully with the benefit of technology I should be able to continue to improve the service to the many BVS members that we now have.

Plan
Some of the improvements I hope to make are:-
a) Provide a 3 day turnaround from receipt of payment to posting of joining pack.
b) Sort any existing membership issues.
c) Provide support to regional representatives wishing to contact local people.

It is timeconsuming to implement some of these improvements so I appreciate your patience in the short term.

Members with current issues that I know of have been approached and issues checked/resolved. If there is anyone that still has outstanding problems please PM me.

My intention is to provide a summary of membership status and plans on this thread. However, I would like to invite any comments and ideas for improvement to this service here as well.

Request
For anyone that is renewing it really makes my, and the treasure's life, a lot easier if you can renew on-line via the main web site.

Current Stats

Some interesting stats are:-

I see from your list of County membership distribution that Cornwall is not listed :(

Does this mean that there are less than 4 members living in Cornwall :?:

I knew we were thin on the ground but........................

Is there anyone reading this who lives in Cornwall and would be willing to meet up :?:

Unfortunately, it does look like there are not many in Cornwall. The figures are approximate as I haven't gone through setting the county on everyone but probably done about 90% of people.

Google documents now (or I have just noticed that it) has a google map gadget. Playing with it and the membership database gave the following Membership Map.

Note: that it only works correctly for Internet Explorer and opera. There is a problem with firefox.

Thanks for the membership map.
I see that there are 10 members in Cornwall including us.
Interestingly the marker for us is several miles out and appears the wrong side of Bodmin. Any chance of correcting it please?

Like I said on the web page it is approximate and is therefore not designed for navigation. That is because it is missing the last 2 letters (i.e. not the full post code database) and all entries are like this.

Because it would be costly it is unlikely that it will be any change to this.

Thanks for that information Rob.
It's actually about 10 miles out, possibly because we are in a very rural situation here and the initial part of a postcode covers a large area.
Still, it is useful to have an idea of where members are.
Thanks again.

Good work, Rob!

Seems to run on and off in Firefox on Linux, and fine in Firefox on Windows. Or maybe it's just me.

I thought the map pins were inaccurate deliberately to dis-identify society members, which is a Good Thing as this page is accessible to all on the internet.

I was amazed at how evenly spread our members are.

That is true Tim.
After spending some time thinking about the data protection side of things and how the information could be abused I would have kept the location inaccurate even if it was supported.

It would have been really nice to put names to (in-accurate) locations, but again from data protection it was not a wise thing to do.

Yes, I must admit I was suprised as well.
