Yes, that Etek went for more than I expected. Seems like electric vehicles are becoming more popular, which is good in general but makes it more difficult to find cheap parts. Running a 300 kg trike at 40 mph on a flat road is likely to take around 5 kW, give or take a kilowatt or two. Then you need...

I'd look closely at fitting a belt drive myself, though it's really a matter of preference. Chain drives have the advantage of being readily available, fairly cheap and easy to set up. Belt drives are more expensive initially but quieter and cleaner, which goes nicely with electric drive. The belt d...

Yes the batteries I use are AGM (absorbed glass mat) and deep cycle (they're not mutually exclusive). They tend to be expensive, but again you can sometimes find good quality ex UPS batteries on ebay that still have a lot of life left in them. I bought a few of these (Item number: 180221264009) a wh...

Hi Agnius Sounds like a good project. Have you any idea of the projected weight of the trike and what sort of acceleration you want. 40 mph is easily achievable but how fast you want to get there naturally affects the motor and batteries you should use. There's actually an Etek motor for sale on eba...

Yes, I'd really like to try the independent drive to the wheels (front or rear) as well. It's an elegant, minimalist solution which should be lightweight and fairly efficient with the right gearing. I don't think it's the best approach with these motors though. Do you have any particular motor in mi...

Hi Andy, sounds like a good project, would love to hear more and see some photos when you’ve made some progress. I haven’t made much headway myself yet, as work keeps getting in the way, but I did manage to do some Blue Peter CAD modelling of my motors to see how they fit on the subfra...

Imagination is running away with me now  Put 10 of those Turnigy/XT motors on a common shaft and you get a peak output of 65 kW from an assembly weighing around 20 kg, allowing for shaft weight and mid-shaft bearings. Mount the assembly in a transmission tunnel in a lightweight car (such as a m...
