Re: New toy.........

These motors are pretty light. The 7kW ones I have are around 1.6kg, so compare very well with the heavy industrial motors that have been adapted for EV use. I'm planning to use two of these on a common shaft to drive my motorcycle conversion. This'll give me around 14kW peak for a motor weight of a...

Re: New toy.........

Glad you kick started this thread back into my consciousness, I'd forgotten about it. Anyway, I've not done much with the motors yet but I have built a BLDC controller to drive them, The whole saga is in this thread on the ES forum, with some photos: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=...

Re: New battery technology claims 300Wh/kg

This seems like one heck of a jump in energy density if it's true. My folding bike pack (LiCoO2 Lithium Polymer) is almost exactly 150Wh per kg, and it's using some of the lightest pouch type cells that are currently available, intended for use in model aircraft. To have doubled the energy density i...

Re: Cree SAM

Nice to know that this neat little trike is available again. Pity it seems to be over the weight limit for the UK as a trike, it'll end up having to be treated as a car, I think, as I believe that the legal limit for trikes to fall into the motorcycle category is 410kg. I would love to see this trik...

Re: Ping Batteries in cold weather

I've used mine down to just below freezing, with no apparent adverse effects that I could detect. Apparently, LiFePO4 cells are slow to charge in cold weather, although I've not ever noticed this - it's just been mentioned on the ES forum by a few who live in cold climates. As the BMS in the Ping pa...

Re: A new vehicle from Sinclair ! The c5 mark 2 ??

Down at the speeds this thing is designed for (sub-15mph) the aerodynamics, as such, would be more concerned with the effect of cross winds I'd have thought. Having the sides open might be essential to stop the thing being blown sideways into oncoming traffic............ The openings would certainly...

Re: Altering bike gears

I think the answer is definitely yes, it looks like you'd have to do the same thing as I've just done to my electric folding bike, change the crankset and chain. The Sakura has a standard cotterless bottom bracket and crankset, but uses a small (around 40 tooth) front chain ring. You can't fit a sma...

Re: Dumb question, from Ed....

Hi Matt, That pack on the folding bike is a 37V nominal (more like 38 to 39V most of the time) 10Ah pack. It's made from 4 of these LiPo packs: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8581" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (which were about $38 each on sale wh...

Re: Dumb question, from Ed....

To give you an idea of the interconnect current handling, the 5Ah cells I'm using have 100A capable connectors and cable that's probably good for maybe 50 to 70A continuous. When paralleled up, the connectors all current share, so for your 100Ah nominal pack you would be looking at 20 off, 100A capa...

Re: Dumb question, from Ed....

The Ping packs are pouch cells, but they are low discharge rate LiFePO4, rather than LiPo, so have a lower energy density. They are fine for low current use (I've had a Ping pack for a couple of years now) but not much use for a higher peak current vehicle. Most of the items on your wish list remain...
