Driveshaft Repair or Replace

Postby Joe T » Wed Mar 04, 2009 7:05 am

I notice I have a small hole in the O/S CV Gaiter.

Are the parts avalable to replace the CV gaiter, I got the shaft off, but it looks like you either need a slide tool to get the gaiter over the CV joint, or strip down the inner joint by removing the peened over knuckle cup.

Or can you get an exchange driveshaft?

Anyone got any part numbers, or supplier details.

Thanks

Joe

Generally you can get a "universal" boot that you stretch over the CV, but you normally need "the tool" to do it

My nearside one is the same. I noticed a little oil weeping when I changed the brushes at the weekend..

If there is a solution that is simple I would be interested.

The only thing I can think of is superglue or self amalgamating tape !. ( A bodge)

Nought wrong with a "Bodge" sometimes, I insulation tape a boot on my fiat and it lasted 10mths until the next MOT 8)

I have so far tried the comapnies below details taken from the reg of the van and coming up as an Electrique model on their computer.

GSF.
Lower Arm £54 Driveshaft £90 (not conviced its right)

Camberly Auto factors.
Lower Arm £44 no listing for driveshaft

Local Citroen dealer.
Front Lower arm (solid metal type) - £98.53
Front Driveshaft - £238.50
Front CV Gaiter Repair kit (outer) - £36.14

To be honest the universal stretch boot is looking favorite at the moment.(£10)
I have looked into replacing the Gaiter the whole shaft and also price on the lower arm are as I noticed a bit of play in the ball joint whilst removing it.
Are these interchangable with the later detachable balljoint arms?

My gaiter only had a small spit and I noticed a bit of grease on the top of the bottom arm, I had wiped it clean last time I checked the brushes.
On removing the gaiter there is still grease in there but no surplus like when you pack them etc.

When I had a joint go on my first Blingo I had to replace the whole swing arm. I spose if you had a big press and could get the old one out, you might find a replacement. Cost me 80 QUID for the whole thing and had to compress the spring etc to repalce it.

I found this video about CV boot replacing informative. There some other good videos on CV joint reconditioning that could be worth a view too.

Fairly standard now, having to replace the whole arm for the sake of one ball joint

Clever money making plan if you ask me, and the ball joint would last a thousand times longer if they bothered to put a grease nipple into it

Oh for the old days when you could grease stuff up, call me old fashioned but stuff lasted far longer.

Ok heres a link to the two choices of lower arm

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WISHBONE-ARM-Citr ... 240%3A1318

And with the bolt on Balljoint

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WISHBONE-ARM-Citr ... 240%3A1318

Now if you look at few of these on ebay its a bit vague as to which models and years are covered, but the steering geometry must be the same for all models surely.
Ironically I can't seem to find the lower balljoint as a separate item
But then that would be too easy

Crikey 24.99 thats a good price if they are reasonable quality. Still a pain to change tho !.
