Formula One - Hybrid to Fully Electric

Postby greenenergytechnologies » Thu Jun 05, 2008 8:59 am

Not really hot off the press, but it's something I've known about for a year now and tried searching for on this site. You may find this interesting!

As far as I can remember, the F1 rules and regulations for 2009 state that all teams must use electric kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) and use this to drive the car along with their ICE. I think rules state that they must use a smaller 1.6 ICE.

Then in 2011, again if I remember correctly cars must be fully electric driven. I'm not sure if this means completely electric or if they can be strong series hybrids with a petrol generator to supply electricity to drive an electric motor.

Have a read for yourself http://217.204.13.141/sport/Regulations/f1regs.html
I couldn't find the preliminary 2011 regulations that I had seen, maybe not on FIA's website.

Couldn't find your reference, too much to read through. However, i wil take your word for it.

I have been hoping for something like this in motor sport. It is probably the most effective way to fund the technology of the future.
On the basis that it is unlikely that the full electric F1 car could drive the whole distance on one charge, there could be a limit on the number or precharged, weight limited battery packs available to pit and the championship points can be based on a factor of both speed and distance covered per battery pack to push forward improvements in both maximum power output to the motor and the wheels and in the range of the battery pack.

Sorry to drag this back up but I haven't looked at the forum for ages.

When I first came across KERS the system reported on was entirely mechanical, http://www.flybridsystems.com/F1System.html. There appears to be a serious weight saving (3:1) using a mechanical system over electric.

I had a look at the 2009 regulations on the FIA website as the previous link did not work. http://www.fia.com/en-GB/sport/regulati ... nship.aspx. The actual file is is a 2.4MB pdf file.
