I completely agree with you.... I suspect it will either be a vibrant community project or a large commercial enterprise that will win through. One thing that is absolutely clear though is that no one is thinking globally today... therefore, a community project that takes an international approach from day one will be a powerful contender.

We are also working with a group who are deploying 70A fast chargers. We will formally announce the charity and it's programmes on the 6th November at the BLFCC.

I think it is great that you are doing this.

Aha. That answers the question in my last post. Thanks. :)
I'm afraid I am not very techy as regards programming etc, so I was a bit unclear about what you were trying to achieve.
Sounds like, if Google decided to play, they could get info from your thing - Just like they get their business 'pins' from Thomson Local, apparently.

Personally, I would rather see a vibrant global community project than a large commercial enterprise.

yeh, I agree... with luck we will build enough momentum that even the commercial guys will find it important to support the open database....

I would encourage everyone to participate in the project... even posting a comment to the project forum will help build our profile;

I am happy to be involved in this particular project. I have some database expertise. A first question is where should we house the initial database? Has someone a spare PC around?

Hi Adéna. We need to ensure that the database is always free, open, and available and I think that is difficult if we setup our own server.

One idea that is gaining a lot of momentum is to add the charge point data to OpenStreetMap and let them manage the database. The beauty of this approach is that OpenStreetMap can cope with all the variables we need - charge points in multi-story parking locations, different connector standards, faulty charge points, etc.

The OpenStreetMap API allows third party websites and apps to extract the charge point data that they require. The developer of the EV Nation iPhone app has said that he can use the API just as soon as we have started uploading charge point data.

I suggest that you add your comments and ideas to the OpenChargeMap discussion forum. Then once we have agreement on the way forward we can all work together to make this project a reality.

I think we are gaining some real traction with the OpenChargeMap project. While we still have some final decisions to make, it's likely that we will host a MySQL database on sourceforge with all data freely available under a PDDL license;

http://www.opendatacommons.org/licenses/pddl/1-0

The database will include a web front end for data entry, and a tool for exporting data in multiple formats including XML. The data entry will be moderated to ensure that it is always of a high quality.

We expect the data to be used immediately by a number of the existing charger apps, and GIS projects including OpenStreetMap and MapQuest.

We are hosting a get together in London in early November. Please let me know if you would like to attend.

We are also looking for contributors worldwide.... please contact me directly or add your comments to the sourceforge project site if you'd like to help;

http://openchargemap.sourceforge.net

If you want to stop the madness that is the dozens of proprietary and closed charge site databases, then now's the time to get involved.
