wiring regs

Postby mab » Tue Nov 25, 2008 11:49 pm

The 17th edition wiring regs BS7671 say the following about the standard blue 16/32/64amp outdoor plugs/ sockets which are also used in marinas (like where I live on my boat in brighton):-

They shall comply to BS EN 60309-1 above 63A and 60309-2 up to 63A. Protection to IP44, and require a 30mA RCD.

In my experience they cope with driving rain and salt spray for years without any nuisance tripping of the RCD so unless your planning on using a jetwash on 'em you'll be fine.

Many thanks to Nick and mab for that really useful information!

I'm not a stickler for rules, but there are so many jobsworths around nowadays that I might as well do this right from the start :)

So all I need is a 16/32A IP 44 blue socket that complies to BS EN 60309-2, plus a 30mA RCD.

That's another item ticked off...

That was my feeling, and certainly they where quite OK to be used for outside use in the heady days of the 15th/16th edition regs , but just wasnt sure about the 17th version of the regs, as from what I've heard and read up on theres a few weird and wonderful daftness they have changed in there

Suppose I better book myself on a refresher course at somestage ......another £300 notes I expect
