How to charge a LiFePo with a power supply?

Postby rossasaurus » Sat Sep 20, 2008 11:27 pm

Hi all,
I need to charge some single Lithium-Iron-Phos cells with a CC/CV supply but would like some guidance.

Do I set current controls to max, then adjust my voltage to X volts above current battery voltage and connect?

or do I set voltage to target level, connect and bring current up slowly from zero?

These are ThunderSky LFP40 cells.
Target voltage is 3.8V
Power Supply 0-30V. 0-6A

thanks,
Ross

Ross, assuming your power supply is accurate then adjust output voltage for 3.70v and set current to max 6A.

Supply should deliver the max current at start, as voltage of cell rises to 3.70v at end of charge current should then start to fall away.

Treat as charged when voltage is 3.70v and current has fallen to less than 0.5A.

I would use 3.70v as max to allow for slight innacuracies in PSU.

Cell at 3.70V is 95% charged anyway.
