Manganese batteries

Postby denny » Tue Nov 17, 2009 11:54 am

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me. I am doing some research on manganese batteries and their use in electric cars. I keep coming accross lithium-ion batteries, but hardly any mention on manganese ones.
Is anyone able to explain:
a) are manganese batteries used in electric vehicles,
b) if so, what is the difference between these and lithium ion ones
c) what kind of manganese is used, where it is from etc

Hi, Denny.
I know nothing about this topic whatsoever, but notice that no-one has replied... so I thought I'd comment, and see if we can get someone who knows what they're talking about to answer

I had a quick look around the web and on the forum, and as far as I can see, Manganese compounds are used in various batteries, including Lithium-based ones, mainly as a medium for allowing the ions to flow around. At least, that's how I understood it.

There's several threads on the forum here that relate, including this one:

Anyway, maybe that's a start?

Folks, I really *really* don't know what I'm talking about... can you help Denny out?

Regards, David

I don't know of any battery chemistry which is based centrally on manganese. Thunder Sky lithium ion batteries use several different materials for their positive electrode; one of these is lithium manganese oxide.

People can get bogged down with the difference between lithium ion, lithium polymer, lithium iron phosphate, and the rest. My own first post to this forum said that I did not know that rechargeable lithium batteries existed. How wrong I was!

Try
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_polymer_battery
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery

Hope that helps
