Quiet forum

Postby chatwindows » Wed Mar 04, 2009 11:11 am

I'm a member of a specialist club for a particular historic rifle. The forum has always been for paid up members only. The rest of the site being open to anyone. It worked very well & there was always a healthy activity thereon. However, to streamline the whole thing & to make specialised sections for general chat, different models, shooting dates, etc; etc; a new web site was created with all of these improvements. The old site being scheduled for closing down within a short time. The result was, that almost nobody used the new site. The old ones demise had to be postponed, & currently the old one is still getting more use, in spite of all the advantages of the new one! There's nowt as queer as folk!

A couple of thoughts on the issue of an open forum. Is it possible to have a "letters page" wherein outsiders could perhaps write in & be replied to? Perhaps an "outsiders" section of the forum that anyone can access, without being privy to the remainder, might also be an option. Either way would enable outsiders, to "test the water" as it were.

Seen that happen quite often

You get people who want to "spruce up" a site and make lots of changes and actually ends up causing more problems, folk get to know how sites work and feel and when you change them drastically it often causes issues, having both new and old running generally will always mean the old will keep more active than the new.

Interesting concept, we could have a forum open to guests I guess i.e no requirements to register etc but generally from past experience any open text box on the web gets spammed out very quickly by Bots advertising everything from ............ ........... well you can guess

Currently theres about 10 forums which are open to view only i.e anyone can view them but to post or contribute you have to register, and of course registering then allows access to all the other forums as a little thank you for signing up. Well thats how its suppose to look and work

Currently ANYONE can sign up and use the forums, you dont have to be a member of the BVS even, but this may change in the future, i.e some areas of the forum will only be accessable to folks who have paid their pennies.
