cracks at the top suggest internal pressure suggests explosion suggests exposed plate, so probably melted case first then ignited remaining hydrogen when electrolyte escaped.

This is caused by a failure of the separator layer in the cell. If it overflowed then it must have passed through to the other cells. So they should have been watered OK.

Blingo 6v cells tend not to just lose capacity, but tend to have one or more of the internal 1.2v cells short out/fail, so giving a much lower voltage.
